Chateaugay, New York
Heman Hill, son of Jonathan and Comfort Hill of Franklin County Vermont, was the first Hill to settle in Franklin County New York.
He was granted 120 acres there, for his service in the War of 1812. He was my great great  grandfather, on my father's side.

He served as a private in the War of  1812, 1ST regiment Vermont, Captain Elijah W. Wood's Company (Warrant 9931, Number
11308).

Following this service HEMAN HILL returned to Georgia and, on 15 March 1816,  he married
Charlotte Cook of Milton, VT.
Charlotte was a sister of Nathan Cook, who married Heman's sister.
Listed in Georgia, Vt in 1820 with 2 sons under 10, himself 16-26, a daughter under  10 and his wife 16-26.

Other Hill families listed are Lyman, Jonathan, Alden and Terner(?).

In 1824 Heman bought 30 acres of land from his father for $330, and in April 1825 he purchased the 3 acres he  was living on for
$32.

The latter deed was witnessed by Ansel Hill. a couple days later, when he mortgaged part of his 30 acres, the deed in Georgia,
Vermont deed book 6, page 148 states:

"I Heman Hill of Georgia in the County of  Franklin & the State of Vermont... for  $280 sell to  Nathaniel M. Tarry  late of Georgia
deceased ...18 acres & 3/4 of an acre of land off from the north side of a piece of land  which I hold by  
deed from my father Jonathan Hill on record in the proper office... ETC. this 16th day of April, 1825."

It is witnessed by Ansel B. Hill (his brother?) in deed book  6, page 236 of Georgia, Franklin County Vt.

Heman Hill sold his land to his brother-in-law Nathan Cook.

He was still in Georgia, Franklin County Vermont in 1830 with:
Males 4 between ages 5-10, 1 between ages 10-15, 1 between ages 30-40
Females 1 under age 5, 1 between ages 10-15, 1 between ages 30-40
Other families listed nearby in 1830 are Lyman, Ansel B., Alden, Simeon and Gaius Hill.

During the 1840'S the Cooks and Hills  migrated across the ice of Lake Champlain to Chateaugay, NY.

Heman is listed in Chateaugay, Franklin County, NY in 1840 with:
Males - 1 under age 5, 1 between ages  5-10, 1 between 10-15, 2 between ages 15-20, 2 between 20-30, AND 2 between 40-50.
The only female listed was his wife Charlotte, age between 30-40.

He is listed in the 1850 census as a farmer (54) with $1,000 of land with his wife Charlotte (53) and family plus a 9 month old
grandson (child of Ami and Lucy) named Anderson Hill.

He received 120 Acres under LAND WARRANT 9,931 in 1855, for his service in the war of 1812.

Listed as Hiram Hill (census takers were sometimes not fully literate and spelled names phonetically) in  1860 as age 65, A farmer
with $1,500 of land and $500 worth of personal property with only Charlotte  (65) living in the household.

Listed as age 75 in the 1870 census, as a farmer with  $1500 of land and $600 of property. His wife Charlotte is listed with him at
age 73.

He wrote his will on October 18, 1870. After his death, Nathan filed his oath of executor  on August 1,  1881.
The will states that he is 75 +, and that his wife is the former
Charlotte Cook. He leaves her the farm of 70 acres, part of Lot 65,
Township 7,  of the old Military Tract. If any of his estate remained After the death of his wife, he directed $100 to his son Wallace
and $50 to his son David.
He assigned Nathan and David as executors, with Putnam B. Fisk and Eli  H. Parsons as witnesses.
